Case Studies

These examples of TORBED processor installation illustrate the durability, control and versatility that our technology offers, operating at temperatures from 140°C to 1400°C.
TORBED

Sappi Maastricht

Installed in 2002, this multistage TORBED drier is used to dry 6 tonnes per hour of paper sludge from 60% moisture to 5% moisture. Replacing a belt drier used for the same purpose, the TORBED achieved greater availability and reduced cost by avoiding maintenance needs and being capable of remote operation. The dried paper sludge is used as animal bedding, ensuring that a waste that would otherwise rot and create carbon emissions is put to use.

TORBED

Commercial Pilot Plant

Shown here in mid-assembly, this plant embraces the circular economy, drying paper sludge and calcining it, providing heat both for industrial purposes and to dry the sludge. The ash from the calcination is a useful cementitious mineral capable of use as a cement substitute in concrete. This is a practical example of Torftech’s technology being used to de-carbonise a foundation industry.
TORBED

Imerys Par

A flash calciner, exfoliating clay to make ingredients for white paint dye, this TORBED processor operates at 1400°C, using gas injection to create intense process conditions.
TORBED

Gas Scrubbing

Using alumina as a reactant to scrub hydrofluoric acid from gas streams exhausted Aluminium smelters. 19 of these giant 6 metre TORBED processors, installed in 1996 and 1997 in Australia and New Zealand, remain in operation despite dealing with both a highly abrasive reactant and a corrosive gas stream.
